چکیده

Polylactides (PLA), biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, produced solely from renewable resources may substitute petrochemically based polymers in a broad range of applications in the near future, if we manage to produce them at lower cost and higher efficiency as nowadays. Possible applications include food packaging for meat and soft drinks, films for agro-industry and non-wovens in hygienic products. The authors developed, based on a new catalytic system, a reactive extrusion polymerisation process, which can be used to produce PLA continuously in larger quantities and at lower costs than before. This extrusion polymerisation process has been developed and tested with laboratory scale machines and the possibilities to extend this polymerisation process to lactide based blockcopolymers have been investigated. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Nacnac(Bn)MgOtBu: a diketiminate-based catalyst for the polymerisation of rac-lactide with slight isotactic preference.

The reaction of N,N'-dibenzyl-2-amino-4-imino-pent-2-ene, nacnac(Bn)H, with 1 or 2 equiv. of MgnBu₂ afforded the homoleptic complex nacnac(Bn)₂Mg. The reaction of nacnac(Bn)H with Mg(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂ yielded nacnac(Bn)MgN(SiMe₃)₂, which reacted with tert-butanol to form nacnac(Bn)MgOtBu. The latter complex crystallizes as an alkoxide bridge dimer and is active in the ring-opening polymerisation of r...

Mechanistic studies on the ring-opening polymerisation of D,L-lactide with zinc guanidine complexes

The increasing shortage of resources has enforced the search for production techniques for biodegradable polymers made of renewable raw materials. An example is polylactide (PLA), an aliphatic polyester, which can be obtained by the metal-catalysed ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of lactide (Fig. 1). The monomer for PLA production is available from corn or sugar beets by a bacterial fermentat...

Ring-opening polymerisation of rac-lactide mediated by cationic zinc complexes featuring P-stereogenic bisphosphinimine ligands.

The diastereomerically pure P-stereogenic bis(phosphinimine) ligands 4,6-(ArN[double bond, length as m-dash]PMePh)(2)dbf [Ar = 4-isopropylphenyl (Pipp): rac-4, meso-4; Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp): rac-4a; dbf = dibenzofuran] were synthesised and complexed to zinc using a protonation-alkane elimination strategy. The cationic alkylzinc complexes thus obtained, RZn[4,6-(ArN[double bond, leng...

Studies on the mechanism of the lactide polymerization with highly active zinc guanidine catalysts

Polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable polyester which is able to replace petrochemical based plastics in many fields [1]. It is commonly produced by ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of the cyclic diester lactide with metal containing initiator systems using anionic ligand systems [2]. Zinc complexes with neutral guanidine ligands have proven to be highly active initiators in the ROP of lactide ...

Robust chiral zirconium alkoxide initiators for the room-temperature stereoselective ring-opening polymerisation of rac-lactide.

Chiral Schiff bases (1H to 4H) and a series of their Group 4 metal alkoxide complexes [(R-1)2Ti(O(i)Pr)2, (R-2)2Ti(O(i)Pr)2, (R-1)(2)Zr(O(i)Pr)2, (R-2)2Zr(O(i)Pr)2, (R-3)2Zr(O(i)Pr)2, (R-4)2Zr(O(i)Pr)2, (S-1)2Zr(O(i)Pr)2 and (rac-1)2Zr(O(i)Pr)2] have been prepared and characterised by 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In solution, both Lambda and Delta isomers were observed, suggesting a low degree...
